Childbirth Preparation Class

Baby Opitz is now close to three lbs. and measures up to 16 inches long!  Even though I tend to read ahead in our baby books, I an always amazed that he/she keeps getting so big!  Matt and I are really excited about meeting this little person very soon!

Matt and I finished our class at Baylor Hospital last night.  I would definitely recommend this to expectant couples!  It informs you about the entire birth process, medical procedures, what your choices are when it comes to a birth plan, breathing and relaxation exercises, and we had a tour of the facility at the end.  At the end of the class, each couple gives a brief presentation on a topic of interest.  The hospital is very new and has it's own women's wing.  After talking with many people about their birth experiences and researching the facilities, we made our decision to deliver at Baylor in Fort Worth.

It seems that hopsitals are really pushing for the all natural experience and really encourage breast feeding.  I am really lucky to have a sister-in-law who is a delivery nurse and has been able to give a lot of insight to what may or may not happen with our experience.  We are going into this with the midset that the baby is really going to determine what kind of birth experience we will have.  We do have a couple requirements that we hope will not raise any questions: we ARE definitely all about the epidural and we do NOT want to use forceps in any situation.  We have also opted to keep it simple in the actual delivery room so that Matt and I are the only ones in the room during labor and delivery.  The hospital has everything one could need while waiting in anticipation of our little one, and once the baby is born, we are so excited to have family come join us to meet the little one!  I can't wait to find out if it's a boy or girl! Ahhhhh!

As we were driving home from the Easter weekend, we started looking around for a good place to buy our baby's first outfit to go home in.  I found the cutest online store called Hiccups Children's Boutique that has darling outfits for spring and summer babies. http://hiccupschildrensboutique.com/  I am completely in love with seersucker (which we are using in our baby's room) so hopefully we can find something cute and cool for our July baby!

This week our goal is to empty out the study and transform it into a very clean and tidy nursery!  More to come on this!

Sliding into Third!

It's hard to believe that we are already in the third trimester!  I feel peace in knowing that the baby could arrive at any moment now, and since the lungs and other vital organs are fully formed, there is a great chance of survival! The words "time flies" have never felt so true.  The baby is growing and moving around all the time.  It's starting to keep me up at night and often catches me by surprise during the day.  If there are five minutes that I am not already thinking about this baby, he/she really gets a kick (no pun!) out of getting my attention.  I think this is my crash course for motherhood!

The baby is now the size of a head or cauliflower and is about 16 inches long.  Everything looks good with him/her and we are looking forward to our next appointment on May 2nd.  It's been a while since we have had a sonogram, but thankfully, our doctor's office is getting a machine for the room since the wait for the machine takes foooorever!  I think I have seen Bee Movie in the lobby now about 10 times.

We also have a baby shower coming up that we are so excited about!  It's happening in Fort Worth on a Sunday afternoon.  It's a couples shower hosted by some of my favorite girl friends.  I can't wait to see everyone!  It has been very hard not to start buying the items on our registry.

I am in OCD overdrive!  It has totally kicked in and I feel almost panicky when I think about how much we have to do before Baby Opitz arrives.  We have started cleaning out the office in preparation for a temporary nursery while we are waiting for our house to be finished.  I thought I would be able to do without one until September, but I can't handle it.  The office needed to be consolidated as it is.  It has created quite a mess, but

I thought it would be fun to make a list of all the things we (baby & I) have cravings for.  Though most of these items could be summed up as a 'sweets' category, I wanted to make a detailed list of what we indulge in.  Favorite snacks and treats:

FRUIT, every different kind: mango, oranges, apples, strawberries, blue, black and raspberries, lemon and lime in our mineral water, peaches, nectarines, bananas.  I probably have double the average serving per day.
ROOTBEER FLOATS, especially from Curly's in Ft. Worth
PBJ, honestly, nothing is better than a peanut butter & jelly with a glass of cold milk
PETTI FORES, among other baked goods like cake.  My love for them has gone to a new level!
APPLE & ORANGE JUICE, I get tired of the usual H2O.
ICE CREAM & GELATO, need I say more?
VEGGIES, carrots & celery with ranch, homemade cold bruschetta

Favorite meals:
CEREAL, Fruit Loops and Cheerios have probably seen growth in sales recently!
BURGERS, I still enjoy these loaded with veggies
SALADS, anything light and fresh!  I probably eat more salads than anything else.
QUESADILLAS, though spice has taken the backseat, mexican dinners are still a favorite!
CHICKEN FINGERS, 'm usually a grilled chix girl, but these days it's got to be breaded.

Things I thought I would want, but don't:
Pickles, (I usually eat these by the jar.... and then freeze the juice for a pickle sicle!), coffee, steak, spaghetti & pizza, cocktails (minus margs)
Things I miss: Sushi, Margarita's, Energy, Fancy cheese boards, sandwiches

Next blog I will share about our birthing class experience!  Happy Easter, have a great weekend!

SOCCER BALL!

We are now in our 26th week, and according to our trusty What to Expect app, my uterus is the size of a soccer ball!  AND, the baby is the size of a eggplant this week!  He/She is moving around a lot, and sometimes waking me up in the middle of the night.  Our baby bedding came in last night and it makes this whole process that much more real.  (It's so cute!)  I can't wait to bring our little monkey (as we have been referring to him/her) home!  Ok, this could totally change when our baby arrives, but as of now we have decided on the following names:

Crawford Ryan Opitz
for a boy, and he will go by Crawford
OR
Adelaide Nicole Opitz
for a girl, and she will go by Addie

As for the Nursery, people keep asking me what I plan to do here.  I have been undecided until I saw this cute bedding, which came in last night (yea!).  It's a really light blue and leans a little toward the green family, making it a blue that could be used either way.  If we have a girl, I plan on painting the room yellow or pink and monogramming (as shown in the picture) with her initials.  If it's a boy, we will either paint the room a neutral color in the beige/french grey family or blue.  Same goes for the monogram.  Remember that we will not move into our house until September, so we'll have time to plan for this!  Matt and I love this classic look!

A group of friends and I hosted a baby shower for a friend of mine and I took some pictures that I look forward to sharing very soon!

THE OPITZ IN OVERDRIVE!

First off, I apologize for the gap between this post and my previous one! There is so much to catch up on, we have been busy busy! Second, thank you Michele for being a diligent little picture taker! You did, infact, document our first photograph on the baby bump before the Barnaby party

Great Expectations!

I hope that one day this blog will be a way for our child/family to look back on the very beginning of his/her life(s). I would have loved to know what my mother was doing while I was in the womb. There are only a few pictures of her that I can find while she was pregnant with me. I don't blame her... I have not been documenting my belly size either. Maybe a few will be fun for our little one to see later on in life. Baby Opitz is now in his/her 25th week of existence! The little one has now been out of the U.S. to visit family in Panama (where my Dad was born and lived until he came to the US to go to the University of Texas in Austin). Related to the baby, we did have many firsts while on our trip which I am excited to share. I will make a separate post about the trip to Panama; there were many day trips and adventures to tell about.

WHILE IN PANAMA, BABY OPITZ:

-took his/her first international flight

-first experienced the ocean at the beach in Coronado

-celebrated Carnival in Penonome

-savored many Panamanian dishes, lots of sea food

-visited the birth place of his/her grandfather (my dad) and toured the Panama Canal

-had one too many amazing snow cones (best I've ever had)

-toured the jungle where we saw a beautiful waterfall

-STARTED MOVING A LOT! Matt felt him/her move for the first time!!!!

-Floated in the pool almost every day

THE 20 WEEK SONOGRAM

It's so fun not knowing what the gender is! Matt and I go back and forth, talking about how fun it will be to have either and how the experiences will be different. Before our last sonogram (while in Panama) I swore that this child was a girl! I even bought the most adorable hand embroidered dress. THEN, we had our big appointment, 20 Weeks, and even though the sonographer didn't tell us what it was (and steered clear of that general area) the baby looks like a boy to me. I think it's because it looks like Matt's profile as a baby. Matt has a big head, I have a small head, and from what I can tell the baby has a big head like his/her Dad! Matt has always thought the baby is a boy and is crazy for a particular name for him. Once we find the right middle name I will announce what it is! Turns out that this name is also a family name on my side... how convenient! As for a girl, which is what I thought the baby was, Adelaide Nicole Opitz is the front runner. And for short: Addie Opitz! Just the sound of this name allows me to visualize the perfect baby room for her!

The 20 week appointment was so fun to watch and stress-relieving! As expectant parents, all I think about is whether the baby is healthy and how he/she is progressing. My avid reading keeps me informed about the weekly progress, but I want to know more about ours specifically! At this stage, the baby's skin is still pretty transparent and we were able to see the organs: four chambers of the heart, liver, kidneys, etc. Matt actually took a video of the "baby tour" with our iFlip that I will post later on. Everything looks great at this point and time! We are so excited and hope and pray that we have a healthy and happy baby.

FUNNY STORY!

We did have a moment of weakness while in the room getting our sonogram! At the end of the 'baby tour' the sonographer asked us, "Are you sure you don't want to know the sex of the baby?" I looked at Matt with pleading eyes (yes, i love the suspense, but sometimes I want to find out!) and we discussed it for way too long without coming to a decision. The tech said, "How about this.... I'll write it down and fold it and put it in an envelope, sealed, for you to take with you and you can decide if you want to open it or not. Many couples do it over dinner or on a special occassion." SO WE TOOK THE ENVELOPE HOME!!! Matt held it up to the light and could not see anything (thick manilla envelope) so we couldn't peek. I put it on the refrigerator with our other sono pictures, thus giving myself TWO reasons to stand at the fridge during the day. It was painful not to open it. We thought about whether we actually did want to know (for 24 hours) and agreed that if we did, we would open it on our 1 year anniversary in April. But neither of us want to spoil the surprises of that special day, so we had to burn it!!! The guessing game is still on!!

A PLACE TO CALL OUR OWN

After a long and tiresome hunt for the right house for our growing family, we finally found the right spot! Last week we signed a contract to build a home with HD Homes on Belle Place in Fort Worth (which is about 5 blocks from where we live now). We know and love the area so much. Still in the historic parts of Camp Bowie, less than a mile to the museum district and a 5 minute car ride to downtown. Not to mention that Fort Worth has greatly improved the dining shopping experience on the way there. We feel really blessed to have found such a great spot to start our family. Even better we are 4 houses away from Curly's Custard (great frozen custard shop) and the city just improved the road closest to ours. Can you tell: I'm looking forward to our evening walks with Baby Opitz to get dessert!?!

The only catch is that our house won't be finished until September... meaning that we will be making the move with a one-and-a-half month old in some of the hottest days of the year. I have to say, the excitement overwhelms all of these potentially hazardous thoughts! The baby's nursery will be ready to move in and now we can plan to have a gender specific room even though we aren't finding out!

The Baby Bump Debut!

Our baby is now the size of navel orange (4.5 inches, 2-3 ounces) which, coincidentally, is what I have been eating a lot of lately! I can't believe he or she is already that big! 16 weeks today and almost to the halfway mark, my how time flies! This baby will be here before we know it! It's incredible that life is created and develops into a child in 10 months. It never ceases to amaze me. Its also crazy to believe that our baby now has it's eyebrows and eyelashes. How cute!

Matt and I both got a cold this past week, but luckily we are recovered now and glad to be rid of it! It is much harder to 'kick the cold' while pregnant, but I think the prenatal vitamins I take everyday kept me from feeling as bad as matt did. His cold was worse, but it took me longer to recover. The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is in town and just about 2-3 miles from our house. I have terrible allergies to animals, hay, etc (So has Matt this year too) and I can assume that this is part of the congestion. My mucus membranes are also starting to swell which can cause pregnancy congestion and nosebleeds, according to What to Expect.

Last week I think I felt the baby move for the first time! I had was in my robe after a relaxing shower and I was listening to Dave Matthew's newest songs on my Ipod, so I decided to put it on my belly for the baby to hear it.... And that's when I felt it! It felt like a summersault in my belly - how cool! I haven't felt anything since then. I have been told that many people mistake this for other (unnamely) pregnancy symptoms, but after reading the most recent forum on What to Expect, I learned that the baby CAN actually hear now. "Studies have shown that babies who are sung to in the womb recognize the same tune when it's sung to them after birth..." I guess I will need to shelf Lady Gaga for now....

We have a winter formal to attend this Saturday for the Barnaby Club and I was searching for just the right dress for it. Matt will be in full penguin attire, so I need something really pretty! I have changed my perception about finding a dress to hide the little bump and instead, I got a dress that bunches over the belly which makes it more noticeable. While this dress is a winter fashion, it could definitely be something I wear for a few more months. It's a gold sequin sleeveless dress that gathers in the center right over the belly. I am excited to debut the baby bump this weekend! Hopefully we will have pictures to share from our fun night out with the little nugget!

The weather today is wonderful and I can't help thinking about the coming spring and summer. Even though I will be fully pregnant when the pool opens, I have already vowed to bring my bathingsuit and exercise clothes with me in a bag to work so when I leave at 5:00, I can get a workout in before hitting the pool. What could be more enjoyable for a pregnant woman in early summer? Maybe a frozen pink lemonade too! :) I don't know why, but this year I cannot get pools off of my mind. I'm craving them! No water birth please, just a place for R&R!

As for my latest food cravings, I always want a salad. My favorite lunch at the moment is a hamburger with double veggies! Anything processed (besides chips and crackers) or out of a can really grosses me out. Dinner is still a small helping and I'm not sure why. Breakfast and Lunch are just more appetizing times of the day for some reason. Moo bars are another favorite. Matt is usually the ice cream man, but lately I have been enjoying it. I don't really have any cravings for caffiene like I did in the first trimester, that paired with exhaustion was brutal! Caffiene-free Iced tea (hibiscus and mango) are always a treat! I am missing ceviche - I may indulge a little bit while in Panama in March. The fish is just too fresh not to have it :)

We are really looking forward to going to Panama to visit family. Hopefully we will be inspired by some family names and the Panamanian culture and also learn a little bit more about our extended family. The last time I went to Panama was when I was 14! It will be so good to see everyone and introduce them to my new husband. I am most looking forward to some beach time and deep sea fishing! Island life is by far my favorite thing in the world - I hope we get some of that while we're there! Maybe it will rub off on our little bun in the oven!!

A new hunger for life....

There have been few changes in me in the past week, but my appetite, which was diminished for about 12 weeks, has returned with a vengeance. Here I was thinking I was doing alright gaining only 5 lbs in the first trimester, now only 2 weeks from it, I have packed on another 3. YIKES! It's funny the way my body changed right away. My curves were immediately 'filled out' and around my 7th or so week it was difficult to 'suck it in.' I didn't think the weight gain would affect me mentally and so soon. I suppose that having a formal event in one week with a barely-there-bump is bugging me. I am super excited about dressing up the bump in cute sundresses and spring attire! Will the warm weather hurry up and get here?!

The bun in the sun.... yay or nay?
When I was younger I was with my family in St. Marten and I saw a beautiful pregnant French woman sun bathing on the oceanfront. I remember thinking how peaceful and beautiful she was. Aside the obvious baby bump, her body was in perfect shape. Before we conceived I thought, "how great will the pool be everyday after work?!" Some baby/pregnancy books I have been reading say not to sunbathe while pregnant and I can't figure out if that's to reduce the inevitable stretch marks or because some pregnant women develop splotchy skin rashes. Both mentioned in What to Expect When You're Expecting. I love being poolside and in the sun, I can't imagine being without that for the summer. Would love to hear thoughts and opinions on this subject!!

More BIG surprises....
In my opinion there are two things every woman should know before you conceive. Neither are talked about enough. In my opinion there should be an entire subject on how to plan on "Pregnancy Brain." Oh yes, it exists! Forgetfulness and loss of Short-term memory. I used to keep my schedule in my head, remember the grocery list and keep up with day-to-day chores. To date, I have left the milk out after I used it, forgotten to take the trash out, let the laundry go bad in the washer.... its my own worst nightmare! I am on top of it now, my Blackberry and pocket planner are essentials. Unfortunately, other mothers that validate this symptom/disease say that it doesn't come back either.... Wouldn't you like to know this before it happens to you?

The second thing is that you are pregnant for 10 full months. Where did 9 months even come from? 4 weeks in a month, 40 weeks = 10 months. It's hard to keep up with how far along I actually am! I will be 9 months pregnant in June, 8 in May, when I will be a bridesmaid in two weddings, though I'm not due until July. This is information a friend informed me of when she had her baby, so I thought I would make it known here, too! For breastfeeding mothers that enjoy cocktails and wine, it could be quite longer until you can enjoy a few toddies.

Bumbos, Boppys, Breast Pumps, Oh My!
Matt and I spent Monday in Dallas doing some research and shopping for the baby. I made a list of 4 stops we could make while in Dallas, but instead we spent close to 5 hours in Buy Buy Baby learning about all of the gadgets and such. Strollers present a challenge with us because we want it to be versatile for our many facets of life. There are only a handful of strollers that you can use to exercise with that are light enough to travel with and provide the features we love such as: a storage basket below, cup holder (not a deal breaker), brakes, UV shade, adjustable handles, etc. I like the Uppa Baby stroller because you buy your car seat separately and can use an attachment for the stroller. It is looking like the best choice for us, followed close with the Bumble rider. Only thing that bugs me about this one... you can't latch the car seat into the stroller. It rests on the bumper bar.... doesn't seem safe for a jogging stroller. We still have research to do, consumer reports, here we come! The baby clothes are the most exciting thing to me; it makes it all feel real.

As far as the decor for the baby room... We obviously have to do something gender neutral. I love the 'gender neutral' bedding sets at www.serenaandlily.com, specifically the Dylan and Cameron. We have also thought about a "light and sweet" version of a Safari room. My favorite animal (other than dogs, of course) is the elephant and I plan on using that in our baby room! I love the tone-on-tone pallettes of ivory and cream, bringing in color through toys and stuffed animals. I picture the baby room on Father of the Bride II, it's so sweet and exactly what I want.

First things first - we are house hunting! We are hopeful that this spring there are more options on the market after a very slow and sparse real estate winter.

One more very helpful website I found is www.babycenter.com and is super helpful for any questions I have. I am currently reading Your Pregnancy, Week by Week. It is my favorite book so far because it's an easy read and there isn't information overload.

14 Weeks!

We had another appointment today... we saw the baby moving around! It was amazing to see it move on it's own. It was so cute, it looked like it was trying to get comfortable or stretch his or her little body and neck. I can't believe there is a tiny human in there! The heartbeat was good and strong, but there are indications as to what the sex is depending on the heart rate, so I don't want to give it away! The Sonographer said that he could pretty much guess what the sex is now! It took everything we had to not break down and find out! These are going to be some very difficult months not knowing. My OB, Dr. Ruth Wiley, who Matt and I both love, said that I might be able to feel him or her fluttering around in my belly within the next 4 weeks. Incredible! We will post a picture of the most recent sonograph soon.

WE'RE EXPECTING!!!

Matt and I have always talked about one day having a family and all the fun and excitement it entails. We have been thinking of names for our unborn children since our days at TCU, when we began dating seriously. The prospect has always been exciting for us. We decided to let nature take it's course after we were married in April, and only 7 months later, we found out that we were finally expecting an addition to our family! We are having so much fun planning for our little one!
HOW WE FOUND OUT...

Matt and I hosted a baby shower for a dear friend of ours on November 19th. Unfortunately there was a Barnaby event scheduled the same night so we made a short stop there, with every intention of returning to our friends at the baby shower. I can't tell you how exhausted I was at 10pm! That never happens to me, I can always stay out with friends! Matt and I arrived home and he was in bed while I got ready for bed. Mother nature wasn't suppossed to visit for another couple of days, but I felt quite different the last 2 weeks so I took a home pregnancy test. It only took about 1.5 seconds for the little plus sign to arrive - I was surprised and a little shaken. I quickly went into the bedroom to tell Matt, he saw the look of panic and surprise on my face - he thought I might have lit something on fire accidentally.... When I showed him he almost popped out of bed, I've never seen him with a bigger smile. Already a proud dad! It was such a great feeling to see him in a state of excitement and helped me to calm down. Like all first-time parents, we were laughing with happiness and kind of scared at the same time.

WHEN WE TOLD FAMILY....

We were really good about keeping our secret hidden from our family, though we thought many times that people were on to us. We had to go through Thanksgiving tight lipped and unfortunately I had an aversion to food so I didn't eat a whole lot. Also, My sweet parents always make 10 times the amount of food we can actually consume in a long weekend so that we have leftovers to take home. Unfortunately, left overs gross me out now. What a pity- I used to LOVE leftovers! Anyhoo, on Christmas Matt and I invited my parents and brother to come to Fort Worth to spend Christmas with the Opitz's. It was a little crowded in our house, but the look on everyone's faces when they all opened 'the gift' from us was priceless. We had made ornaments, glass globes with snow in the bottom that had a picture of the sonogram, and a note that read, "expecting our new addition on July 23, 2011." It had cute little baby feet prints too! It was a really special time together! Shortly after the new year, we invited friends to a local favorite, Michaels, to share the news with them, and an email to friends out of town.

MILESTONES....

-We found out about the baby when it was 3 weeks old!

-Our 8 week appointment was the first time we saw the baby, he or she looked like a tadpole!

-Nausea dissappated after week 9. Thank Heavens!

-Week 10, while my parents were visiting, I had a dream that I was holding and nursing our baby, it was so real - I could see what the baby looked like and what it's name was (but i dont want to give that away just yet :)

-We shared our news with family on Christmas Day 2010, the baby was 10.5 weeks old.

-Week 12, we got to hear the heartbeat for the first time. We were able to see the fully formed baby, legs, arms, fingers, toes! It was precious!

-We shared the news with friends, the same day as our 12 week appointment.

PROGRESS.....

The baby is now 12.5 weeks (10.5 fetal age) and has all of his or her arms, legs, fingers and toes! That was so exciting to see on the Sonogram. Hearing the baby's heartbeat was another really great experience! Now that the nausea and complete exhaustion passed, about week 9, (I'm still tired, but not as bad) it is hard to relate to the pregnancy because I can't feel anything yet. This is the first week I have had to use my BeBand, which means my abdomen is definitely growing! I look forward to sundresses this summer which, hopefully will allow me to forego purchasing any maternity pants!

Looking forward to posting more about the little one!
